The sino japanese war (1894-95) and it"s aftermath over the next 9 months, the japanese expelled the chinese troops; captured part of manchuria. While claiming to promote a program of korean independence, japan planted seeds for the full scale colonization of korea in 1910. The korean king had been able to hold off such colonization temporarily through alliances with russia but this broke down when japan also defeated russia in the russo-japanese. In 1905, korea was made a formal protectorate of japan, which placed korea"s external affairs under japan"s control. In 1910, japan annexed japan as a colony. In some ways, japanese colonization did promote modernization (which doesn"t mean it was a good thing there are other routes to such modernization) Korean non agricultural commercial economy had been much less developed than china"s or japan"s in the 19th century. But by 1945, korea was the second most industrialized county or cology in east asia next to japan.
