Document Summary

Eas 100 lecture 23 ocean waves, tides, and changes in sea level. El ni o warmer period of change near the equator. La nina relatively cooler period of time near equator. The earth and moon orbit around a common centre of gravity: the centre of earth. The earth and moon both pull on each other! The side of earth that"s facing the moon is pulled away from earth because of gravitational pull! On the side of the earth opposite the moon, water also bulges because the gravitational effect is the least, so the earth"s spinning action allows the water to almost spin away : hydrosphere forms a distorted ellipsoid shape. Remember the moon dictates where the bulge of water is on earth! The sun can only add or subtract gravitational pull. Most areas have long-term sea level change relative to the land: submergence more water covers land, emergence water inches away to expose more land.
