Using population structure to assess human mediated change. Ecologists can use shifts in population structure of important species to draw attention to ecological change. Artic, polar bears, pollution: effects of pollution in artic. How this is done : identify the source of the effect (pollution, demonstrate a negative physiological effect at the individual level, effects at the individual level translates to population level changes. You can transport any material from areas of high population density to the artic. In the same way you can get this transportation through air currents. Pops: covert into gases (in temperate areas) and get transported to artic (in here it condenses and lets deposited into the land and oceans up north). Once a toxin gets into an ecosystem can get absorbed up the food chain. Pcb: likes to stick and hold on to body tissues (hydrophobic), takes a long time for organisms to get rid of it.
