What does the author really tell us about the text: can the text not stand alone, stop reading text objectively, stop zoning in on author/cultural context. Meaning doesn"t come from the author but from the reader. Pay more attention to technical details than assumptions. Author is french and the article is translated so maybe it"d make more sense if it wasn"t. Warns against getting distracted from the text: by cultural background, historical context, etc look closely at complexities of text, grammatical etc Surrealism goal was a revolt against restraints on creativity: social/artistic norms, logical reasons, conventions goal was to dodge the conscious mind and reach the deep mind". There might not be a right answer but there are wrong ones. The linguistic sign unites, not a thing and a name, but a concept and a sound-image. "
