ENGL121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Four-Dimensional Space, Sexual Conflict, Coevolution
Document Summary
Sexual conflict: sex is costly (takes time and energy). The costs are sometimes shared, but in some cases there is a cost in-balance: then there"s sexual conflict. There is a cost when mating is not necessary. Selection should favor strategies to minimize the cost. Sometimes this leads to co-evolution: reciprocal evolutionary event. Genetic changes in one group can lead to genetic changes in another group. Range of tolerance: abundance and distribution of animals is dependent on local conditions and optimal conditions. Depending on the local conditions the performance of the organism is going to vary. Tolerance: range at which the organism can survive. Principle of allocation: there are limits on the available energy. When energy is allocated to one function, it reduces the energy available for other functions. Energy budgets: how an organism spends its energy. The size of the pie can change over time.
