England wanted/needed to be better than france and spain (other colonial powers) Tried to create a moral cover - benevolent imperialism. This was heavily protested (people believed it gave other powers an economic advantage) Disgust with slavery - anti-slavery position made english seem more victorious. Trade and missionary work went hand in hand. English viewed it as their job to help those who were lower . Noble savage - uncivilized but have an innocence that the english had lost. England had a number of wars against rivals, colonized, and those it was trying to colonize. Russia had been trying to get a warm weather port - crimea is between what is now. England and france teamed up (big deal!) worked with turkey to fight russia. England sold the fight as a moral cause" (for freedom of the oppressed!!) Contrast between benevolent imperialism and oppression imperialism, but not no imperialism. In some ways, this was the first modern war.
