ENCS406 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Adaptive Management, Rangeland Management, Encs

37 views3 pages

Document Summary

Requires integration of many disciplines (is distinctly inter-disciplinary). Basic principles of rangeland management: rangelands (especially on public land) are managed for multiple use using ecologic, economic and social considerations (necessitates coordinated resource management planning crmp) Sustainable range management practices are based on sound ecological principles (ie applied ecology). Rangeland productivity is inherently variable in space and time. Mixed grass prairie has heterogeneity but much more subtle. Heterogeneity is great for wildlife, but not so much for ranchers. Livestock can pick and choose plant communities and potentially degrade them (patchy use). Heterogeneity can also allow livestock to select what they need nutrition wise, which is a pro for them. Rangelands constitute a renewable resource in the long-term, but only if the management and humans will exist. We add inputs to agroecosystems that make us rely less on natural feedbacks, but these can have negative effects.
