Mitos are abundant organelles in most eukaryotic (euk) cells and tissues. However, vast majority (95-99%) of proteins found in mitos are encoded by genes in nuclear. A: ranges from ~500 to ~2000 depending on the organism. With some notable exceptions, mitos are maternally inherited (uniparental inheritance) Mitos formed by growth and division (not de novo) ie. you need mitos to get more mitos. Fe-s clusters: important cofactors to enzymes in nucleus and cytosol. Enzymes for oxphos found in mt inner membrane. Cp1 brings up a point about mt structure. The joining point of the cristae to the boundary membrane are also a specialized structure. Implies that the contents of the cristae may be isolated from each other and the ims. Also suggests that cristae membrane and innner boundary membrane have di erent functions and composition. Boundary membrane is enriched for proteins that import other proteins into the matrix. Cristae membranes are enriched for proteins involved in oxphos.
