GENET301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Pink1, Phosphatase, Knockout Mouse
Document Summary
Classical textbook picture shows kidney-shaped mitos existing independently in the cytosol. Mitos can range from small spheres or kidney shapes to highly branched structures (interconnected) Arrangement depends on organism, tissue, time in cell cycle, stress on cell, etc. Cp3b - g1 phase - central interconnected mass. Highly connected mitos have been observed in many organisms from yeast to humans. Individual mitos or groups of mitos may have specialized functions in different parts of the cell - therefore exchange of materials can be increased/decreased by controlling fission/fusion. Appear to be involved in a mt quality control mechanism (mito qc) Autophagy = process by which cells get rid of damaged/unneeded materials ie. damaged mitos are modified ex. Mitos are recognized and engulfed by an autophagosome - fusion with lysosome for degradation. Even been suggested that mitos may have a mechanism for sorting damaged material to one end of a mito.
