HE ED221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Leptin, Ghrelin, Nutrient Density
Document Summary
This lecture focuses on overweight and obesity, as well as weight bias and discrimination. The definition of overweight and obesity is an abnormal or excessive gat accumulation that may impair health. However, there is controversy on whether obesity is a disease, and whether definitions should reflect as such. Some of the medical associations in north america (2013 in the us, and 2015 in canada) have been classifying obesity as a disease, but it is still not unanimous. In order to classify someone as overweight/obese, bmi is often used. It is used widely among assessing populations, correlating body fat with future health risk, and it is a simple and non- invasive indirect measure. There is u-shaped relationship with body fat and health risk, those with high and low body fay are at more risk than those in the middle of the spectrum.
