HECOL310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Structural Functionalism
Document Summary
Families undergo stages of development, just like individuals. There are tasks associated with each stages of development. Normative events: commonly held behavioural expectation (ie: a 20 year old should be in school pursuing a higher education in our society, norms are the basic building blocks for each stages of development. Families must be viewed in multiple levels of analysis. Society, family & individual: families are influenced by societal, familial, and individual contexts, we need to look at the context in which we are analyzing families. Development is reciprocal: an individual"s development influences development of the family as whole; a families. Families should be viewed over time: the catalyst for change can be internal (biology) or external (environment, transformation over time families require change over time. Important concept of this theory when something is expected; there is a timing norm. Timing indicates when an individual or family should undergo certain stages/transitions.
