Terrorism of the 70s & 80s: radical revolutionaries & nationalists (politically and ideologically motivated) Bader-mainhof (german terrorist organization in 70s, consisted of three people. ) Red brigades - alt-left, italian, political, kidnapped italian prime minister for a year & 1/2. Ira - irish, terror attacks against britain, typically warned about bombs before they went off, these warnings stopped in to 90s. Terrorism of the 90s & 2000s: religious imperative / fanaticism. Transcendental function (direct response to some theological demand or imperative) Seeks to eliminate broadly defined categories of enemies. Not attempting to appeal to any other constituency than themselves. Object is a kind of cosmic revolution. Anti-abortion activists in us #1 terror group, most casualties and highest level of terror. Isis is not only religiously based, also considered a modern terrorist group because they aim to own a state, and have political and economic demands and goals. Al qaeda - only religiously motivated. no state prerogative/political goals.
