From1760tilltheturnofthecenturyQuebecdidn’treallyhavemuchvaluefortheBritish.
NewfoundlandandNovaScotiaofferedfishing,plusNovaScotiacouldcontroltrade.Allthe
Quebecofferedwasthefurtradewhichhaddeclinedaftertheconquest.
Itwaspolitics,ratherthaneconomicsthatshapedBritishpolicy.TheBritgovernmentfaced3
challenges:
1. hadtodealfrenchpeoplealreadyincolony(assimilationtoaccommodationto
assimilation)
2. theproblemofunrestinaboriginals(solvedbygivingland)
3. howtointegratenewcoloniesintoempire(westindies=sugar,Newfoundland+Nova
Scotia=trade+fish,Quebec=?)
IntheIntegrationanddevelopmentoftheimperialeconomy,theBritishgovernmenthadlittle/no
success.
AmericanRevolution1775to1785:Inmanywaysitwasacivilwar.Strongestinsouth,notso
strongincolonieslikeNewYork.Britishcouldn’tsustainwar,hadhadalotofwarsinpast,and
peoplewerewarweary.BecauseofthisBritaingrantedindependence.Thiscausedthemtolose
alotofland(NoEuropeanpopulationwestofottawariver.)

In1791:QuebecisdividedintoUpperandLowerCanada.NovaScotiaandNewBrunswickwere
separated.
Coloniesarethereforthebenefitofthemothercountry.Commercewasthekey.Themercantilist
policyhadtwomajorthemes
1. ContinuationofNavigationActs:anycountrythatwishestotradewithGreatBritainhasto
dosowithBritishShips.ThismeantthatBritaincontrolledcarryingtrade.Sourceof
TensionwithAmericawhichwantedtotradedirectlywithEnglandandnotusebritish
ships.
2. CornLaws(referredtowheat):Britishwantedselfsufficiency,wantedtobeabletofeed
ownpeople,andsoitencouragedcoloniestogrowwhatEnglandcouldn’t.Cornlaws
weretaxes/tariffsonforeign(nonempire)imports.Wheateconomybegantogrowin
upper+lowercanada.It’spurposetoprotectBritishagriculture,andtogivecolonies
advantage.
