conflictanddidn’twanttofitanymore,NewFrancerecognizedIroquoisasabufferbetweenthe
FrenchandEnglishsotheyagreedtopeace.
ButinEurope,warbrokeoutin1701(Spanishwarofsuccession).NewFrancewastoldthat
thereweretoomanyfurs,butNewFranceretainedthepostsinwestfordefense.
TheTreatyofUtrechtendstheWarofSpanishSuccession.FrancelostthewarbutPhilipthe
5th(LouisXIV’sgrandson)isallowedtoremainKing.AcadiaandNewfoundlandwerecaptureby
theBritishandHudson’sBayandNovaScotiaweregiventoBritain,UndertheTreatythe
IroquoisareforcedtobeBritishallies,notneutral.
Frenchbuildpostsininteriortoensuretheygetthebestfurs.Theywereallowedkeepfishing
rights,keepCapeBreton,madeatradingtocontrolaccesstointeriorandafter1713theFrench
hadestablishedtheirposition.
ThefursinFrancehadbeenstoredforsolongthatratsandinsectshadruinedthem,demand
forfursincreasedagain,andtheFurtraderevitalized.
