HIST 261: POST WWII                                                                                                                   1    The war brought jobs and prosperity, the prosperity continued (surprisingly) after the war. Political  spending during the war had stabilized the economy.   ● government intervention was seen as a positive thing   ● Canadians often compared this to the Great Depression when the government did not intervene    1945­1972: Welfare State in Canada  ● Uncoordinated programs created by both provincial and federal government  ● Family allowance, Unemployment insurance, pension, medicare    Newfoundland joined Canada on March 31st 1949  ● Newfoundland suffered greatly in the great depression, was ran by a commission throughout gd  and WWII  ● In late 1945, conference to decide whether Newfoundland should be self­governed, join  Canada, or remain with England   ● There was no clear winner in the first referendum (which included all 3 options), the second  referendum only included self­g
