HE ED221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pedometer, Population Health, Accelerometer
Document Summary
In this lecture, we discussed different health behaviors including physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, and diet/nutrition. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that expends energy beyond resting levels. Sedentary behavior is defined as any waking behavior characterized by an energy expenditure of less than or equal to. 1. 5 mets, while in a sitting, reclining, or lying posture. Sleep is defined as loss of conscious awareness. Diet/nutrition is defined as the kinds of foods that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. In order to determine health behaviors, we must be able to measure them, and assess the quality of a measure. This can be done by assessing validity, reliability, and objectivity. Validity refers to the accuracy of an instrument in measuring what it seeks or claims to measure. Reliability refers to the stability and consistency of the instrument. Objectivity refers to being free of bias and uncontaminated by the emotional aspects of personal assessment.
