Small group communication *elements on this topic will be on the quiz. Challenges: different expectations, standards in quality of work, work equitability, clashing personalities, differing maturity levels, inexperience & discomfort dealing with con ict, uncertain leadership skills. Small group discussion tend to follow a predictable pattern. Research suggests that 1 or 2 people tend to dominate group discussion no matter the size of the group, affecting the group"s success. Roles: assigned roles given to someone explicit, assumed roles someone happens to get due to personality implicit, task roles objective: stay on task . Initiator-contributor, coordinator, director, evaluator, information seeker, opinion seeker, opinion giver, clari er : maintenance roles objective: connect group members . Encourager, harmonizer/tension reliever, gatekeeper, set standard (maintain initial agreement), follower : individual roles objective: get recognition for what they know out of self-interest, usually at the expense of the group . Recognition seeker, clown, blocker, dominator, special-interest pleader, cynic, self-confessor.
