Lecture 25 & 26: fabric hand and drape. Hand & drape: physical attributes that a ect aesthetic qualities of the fabric. The way a fabric feels when touched and how it drapes in di erent con gurations are important properties for garment design. They also in uence consumer acceptance of the nished product. Hand is the term used to describe characteristics that can be perceived by touching or manipulation a fabric. Fundamental aspect of a fabric that often determines the success or failure of the textile product. Experienced workers in the textile industry can determine end use suitability of a fabric rom its hand. Subjective impressions that make up hand assessment are di cult to communicate. Astm divided sensations of hand into 8 components that can be subjectively assessed rated on a scale of 1-5. Aatcc also developed a protocol to minimize variability in this subjective process by specifying conditions. Most fabrics fall in the middle of the scale.
