For the most part, absence of postvocalic r is associated with the british, while its presence is associated with north americans. This is, of course, an overgeneralization and chapter 5 provides us with details to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon. The other interesting aspect of this variable is that it is undergoing change. In some parts of the world, postvocalic r is on the rise, in others, it is being used less and less. It therefore allows us to consider factors involved in linguistic change.
