MMI133 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Antigen-Presenting Cell, Natural Killer Cell, Gingival Sulcus
Document Summary
The body"s defense system against: pathogens, cancers, organ transplants! (this is not good!) Functions to: keep microorganisms out, remove microorganisms that get in, combat microorganisms that remain inside, fight cancer (mutated/transformed cells) Well balanced immune system should be able to: Skin: physical barrier: distinguish between self and non-self (pathogen, innate/ natural (non-specific): 1st line and 2nd line, adaptive/acquired immunity (specific): 3rd line (immune cells, mucous membranes think and permeable barriers, mechanical removal: Ciliated cells in the respiratory tract (ciliary escalator) Prevent pathogen binding to host cells: secretions: Fluid that flows into gingival crevice b/w teeth. Similar composition to blood serum (immune cells/molecules) Flushing action, ph, etc: normal flora competition for space, nutrients. Inflammatory response: cuts lead to inflamed response. Swelling, heat and redness, pain: if cuts infected, wbc elevated increase. Wbc increase to mediate immune response: sore throats swollen lymph nodes. Lymph nodes where immune cells multiply in preparation to mount an effective immune response.
