In 1900, most fatal diseases were infectious diseases (influenza, pneumonia, tuberculosis). In 2008, mostly lifestyle diseases were fatal (cancer, heart problems) Public health changes: treatment of water hence water borne diseases have decreased. Evolution and systematics: carl linnaeus is a german taxonomist who developed the concept of hierarchical taxonomy. Named after the scientist that discovered them for the first time: concept of species: organisms that breed with each other to produce fertile offspring. Bacteria produce asexually so species concept is not very useful to microorganisms and some plants. Effect of bacteria in our lives: 80% of pathogenic diseases are caused by bacteria. Despite that, clear majority of bacteria are harmless. (archaea do not cause diseases!: food production, additives, alcoholic beverages, water waste treatment, recycle elements in the environment, recombinant dna biotechnology (insulin production) Origin of life: darwin envisioned a warm little pot, that had right chemicals, temperature, light.
