MMI133 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Hydrogen Sulfide, Lactoperoxidase, Gingivitis
Document Summary
More organisms/ml in saliva than in feces. Some microorganisms make specific attachments to teeth or mucosal surfaces. 1 to 1. 5 liters of saliva secreted/day from salivary glands, flushes mouth, secretes iga, lysozyme, lactoperoxidase, lactoferrin, wbc, amylase. If salivary flow decreases (between meals), 4-fold increase in microbial population. Dehydrated patients typically have bad breath due to dry growing environment. Caused by waste products and anaerobic bacteria. Anterior (front) of tongue gets flora rubbed off, unlike posterior tongue (higher odour levels) Risks: hiv, hepatitis or other soft tissue infections. Common cause of mouth and throat infection in immunocompromised and neonates (inhalation steroids, chemotherapy, broad spectrum antibiotic, immune defects and cancer) Thrush - growth of mycelium of pseudohyphae on tongue, may spread to esophagus making it painful and hard to swallow. Inflammation causing degeneration of supporting tooth structures. May occur in absence of caries, but plaque is a major factor. Cementum covering roots of teeth is attacked.
