City started to hire more people than farms. Now about half the ip live in cities. Urban pop are less educated, more likely to be jobless. Yet lots say they moved to gain a job and education. Major trading sites --> trading posts ---> small towns---> nowadays major towns. Winnipeg was originally were the metis lived much before the town ever existed. Cities were chosen because they were already major sites of gathering. Education and opportunities are push and pull factors. Women who lost status couldn"t live on the reserve. Just b/c someone moves to an urban setting doesn"t mean the rural ties are severed. Usually for families that moved to the city and didn"t know anyone. Used to fill a community void that happens when your leave for the city. On reserves the federal gov"t takes care of it. Most community of interest model are like friendship centre. Don"t kno(cid:449) if it fun(cid:272)tions as (cid:449)ell on the prairies.
