Issues communities face are related to cultural self-confidence. Violence against indigenous women is linked to sexualisation. The images matter because they are likely to see those first before ever meeting a real indigenous person. All stereotypes focus on ip from 100"s of yrs ago. Struggled over who has control over the meaning of indigenous culture. Communities feel legally obligated to live up to images in mainstream media. The stronger it is the harder it is. Tribes apply to bia to gain federal recognition. Need to make sure you were a tribe before the 13 colonies. And have persisted as a tribe of recognized people. Culture is judged used by what most americans accept. The books and images colour the judges perception of what indigenous is.
