11-14 weeks: nuchal translucency test - performed through an ultrasound and is determined by the thickness of fluid buildup in the back of the fetus, thicker than normal can indicate genetic disorders. Inevetalbe miscarriage: surgical intervention may be needed and all the uterine contents are not sponteously removed pelvic ultrasounds used to assess the status of the fetus. Marginal placenta praevia: placenta separate as its edge and blood escapes vaginally. Central placental abruption: placenta separates centrally and blood is trapped. Low lying placenta previa: placenta in the lower uterine segment but not covering the internal cervical os.
