Active listening: being attentive to patient verbally and non-verbally, shows acceptance and respect. O - open posture (arms and legs uncrossed) Communicating how the patient looks, sounds or acts. Do not state offensive or embarrassing statements. Make observations without judgement or assumptions (ex. Not like you look like a mess? , are you depressed because you haven"t touched your food? ) Correct one is: you look tired , i see you"re wearing lipstick today . Can be therapeutic if used properly, be cautious. Help patients express their emotions by making observations, encouragement, and letting them express negative feelings. Helps patient think about their thoughts, etc. Letting them know whats happening, relieve anxiety, etc. Rephrase it, explain further, give an example of what he/she means. Use focus to guide direction of conversation, we"ve talked a lot about your medications, but let"s look more closely at the trouble you"re having in taking them on time.
