NURS113 Lecture 6: Chonic disorders of Neuro Function
Document Summary
Transient neurologic event of abnormal or excessive cortical electrical discharges: shown by disturbances of skeletal motor function, sensation, autonomic visceral function, behaviour, or consciousness. Epilepsy / seizure disorder = recurrent seizures. Causes: cerebral injury, lesions, metabolic / nutritional disorders, idiopathic. Triggered by speci c stimuli ( ashing lights, fever) Change in membrane potential: certain neurons abnormally hyperactive and hypersensitive to changes in their environment (epileptogenic focus place where seizure starts on the brain, nearby neurones recruited. Aura / prodrome: subjective sense of an impending seizure. Whole brain surface is a ected during the seizure with loc. Absence (petite mal: children with staring spells that last only seconds. Atypical absence: myoclonic jerks and automatisms with staring spell. Tonic-clonic (gland mal: jerking of many muscles. Atonic (drop attack) look of muscle tone. Abnormal electrical activity restricted to 1 hemisphere doesn"t over to the other hemisphere. Simple: no change in level of consciousness.
