NURS140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nephron, Bronchus, Macrophage
Document Summary
Tissues: groups of similar cells with common embryonic origin and common function. Squamous: thin, flat, irregular in shape (puzzle pieces) Cuboidal: square shape (l+w are equal) , nucleus centrally located. Columnar: hexagonal, tall, nucleus close to basal lamina, ones with hair are called ciliated. Transitional: changes shape, usually seen in urinary bladder or ureter (for stretching, distension) Uterus is not transitional because transitional should be changing every 2/3 hours. Pseudostratified: single layer thick but all are connected to basal membrane not all reach the apical surface. Then nuclei are at different height so they can look multilayered. Provide physical protection to underlying surfaces (from abrasion, dehydration, destruction by chemical/bio agents. Controls permeability (any substance that enters or leaves body) Provides sensation (innervated, can detect changes in environment) Produces secretions (glandular epithelia produce secretions through epithelial ducts) ** extracellular fibers and ground substance compose the matrix (ground substance and fibers like liquid plasma) found between cells.
