Document Summary
Physical development progresses at a slower pace than cognitive and psychosocial development. Later, language develops and allows for thinking about the past or future. The intuitive phase (4-7 years) of the preoperational stage transitions the children from having only egocentric thought to social awareness and the ability to consider other viewpoints. Although egocentricity still persists, it gradually gets replaced with social interaction. They begin to recognize behaviours that are and are not socially acceptable. The children are motivated to learn these differences by the wish to avoid punishment and rather than their desire to get a reward. Preschoolers are better able to differentiate between which behaviors elicit punishments and which elicit rewards.
