The act of killing oneself with the full knowledge or expectation of its fatal outcome. Approximately 1 million lives worldwide are lost every year to suicide. Every death by suicide leaves at least 6 survivors. Suicide is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Your own personal attitudes influence how you assess patients and their risk for suicide. Acute: requires immediate action, can involve the police, ems, and emergency department, often requires longer admissions to determine underlying cause and treatment. Chronic: assessed in the context of the situation, often managed by the community mental health and outpatient services, may require short-term hospitalization to prevent dependency. All clients /patients reporting suicidal ideation must be taken seriously! The most essential factor in obtaining information about suicide and promoting treatment. Rapport building strategies: establish your role and purpose, privacy, use effective communication strategies, listen and avoid assumptions.
