NURS 341 Statistics (Reading research, chapter 2 readings)
Introduction
- Outlines background of problem or issue being examined, summarizes the existing
literature on subject, and states research questions, objectives and possible hypothesis
- Central ideas, concepts, variables
- In some cases, researchers test a Hypothesis – states the predicted relationship
between 2 or more variables related to the research intervention
- Literature review
Methods
- Describes techniques used to conduct the study, including design, sample, setting and
data collection and analysis
Design
- Plan for answering the research question
- 1. What is the research approach? (qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods?)
- 2. What is the research design?
Qualitative designs
- analyzing words, observations, describe, interpret meanings
- Qualitative research – gain in-depth uderstadig i atural settig, study people’s
perceptions and experiences
- Inductive analysis (specific data to broad)
- Flexible Emergent design strategies (ex. altering sampling strategy to explore a concept
identified in data analysis)
- Often used when little is known about topic
Phenomenology research
- Focuses o eaig of people’s experiences concerning some phenomenon
- Descriptive and interpretive phenomenology (hermeneutical)
Grounded theory

find more resources at oneclass.com
- Objective is to explore social processes that guide human interaction
- Data collected and analyzed concurrently by constant comparison of new data with
information already collected
- Theoretical sampling to verify category properties and relationships among them
Ethnography research
- Seeks to understand the world view of a cultural group
- Lengthy observational periods, field notes
- Thick description, very detailed account of cultural behaviors and practices
Narrative research
- Examines oral/written story that describes a series of events that took place
Participatory action research
- Collaboration between researchers and those with a problem and a perceived need for
change
- Collaboration generates new knowledge and solution to the identified problem
- Study the problem systematically, solve it by taking action that is relevant to the
participants
- Empowerment, freedom from oppressive influence is goal
Case study
- In-depth study of a situation or event
- Study tries to understand issues related to history, development or circumstances
Historical research
- Looking for patterns and trends among past events and their relevancy to the present
- Authenticity of data source is important
Rigour in qualitative studies
- Trustworthiness (rigour) – steps taken to ensure that the study procedures meet high
standards and that you can trust the results
- Use verification strategies at each step
- Bracketing (descriptive phenomenology) – idetify the researcher’s precoceptios
about the topic to suspend them and set them aside
Aspects of trustworthiness
- Credibility – What is the truth/reality of the findings?
- Some techniques are:
o Prolonged field engagement
o Peer debriefing (with experts)
o Checking with participants (member check)
