34 views2 pages

Document Summary

Diets in developing countries is deficient in protein. Even if the diet has protein it is mainly from plant sources. Khwashnikor is got by the first child when the second child is born because second child is breastfed so there is not enough protein in the diet for the first child. There is a bloated abdomen which is filled with fluid. Fluid accumulation happens in liver because no transport protein is available. There is not enough protein in the blood to stop water from diffusing out. Marasmus is a protein energy deficiency which means waste away. In khwashnikor, some fat retained no ketosis because adequate amount of carbohydrates available vs body sources has been depleted to provide energy, ketosis occurring. Having too much protein affects kidney and bones. As the protein intake increase, production of urea increases so more fluid losses occur. High protein for weight loss causes loss of 2 or 3 pounds right away.
