Document Summary

Hypohydration: reduction of body water from normally hydrated status (low water). Dehydration: a degree of hypohydration that equals fluid loss greater than or equal to 2% of normal body weight. Hyperhydration: the increase of body water from normally hydrated status (high water). This is usually caused by a retention agent that was taken such as glycerol. Most athletes will end a work out in a state of dehydration but with fluid consumption and post exercise eating it will be corrected eventually. Athletes will take part in this practice in order to improve appearance or make weight before an event. Common sports where this occurs is wrestlers, jockeys and rowers. This is a dangerous practice because there is a concentration loss. In terms of performance there is muscle fatigue and loss of power and strength. Remember, at 2% body weight loss it goes from hypohydration to dehydration. By 7% body weight loss most athletes have to stop activity and recover.
