Description
Feb 4 – Media Sports Cultural Complex Media Sports Cultural Complex • Media sports cultural complex is basically everything related to sports • Media Sports Cultural Complex is “all the media and sports organizations, processes, personnel, services, products and texts which combine in the creation of the broad and dynamic field of contemporary sports culture” (2-3) • MSCC is so pervasive that we can never escape it • We actually have a civic duty to try and understand media sport • Any kind of sports game show, a sportscast, and sport alerts are part of the MSCC • MSCC is so pervasive is it that we can never escape it • We actually have a civic duty to try and understand media sport. Due to it being so powerful and pervasive in our culture we should understand it. What parts of MSCC should we challenge? If we don't understand how the MSCC works, our attempts to change it wont be effective • MSCC is the all media and sports organizations, processes, personnel, services, products and texts which combine in the creation of the broad and dynamic field of contemporary sports culture Media Sport • We are all part of the culture, whether we like it or not • Anytime we advocate a sports team, we are part of it • MSCC does a lot of association with a wrongful act. Think habs, and you get certain songs and aspects of culture which revolve around the habs) Reading Media Sport • All media sport texts are made • They are produced and consumed • Consumption isn’t limited to the intention of the producer. • Interpretation of these texts can be made that are unexpected or planned for or hoped for • Three aspects to media sport: production, text audience Producing Media Sport Texts We need to understand • How sport is organized and governed (different issues such as cheating and doping but different sport bodies have different ways of governing) • Connections between sport bodies, corporate media organizers, sponsors, supra state bodies, national states, NGOs • Supra state bodies might be like the EU or the UN. They do have an impact on events like the Olympics and how they get played out • Here the political and economic stakes are very high, and decision taken at this level have very important ramifications, including economic collapse and political boycotts • Ex.
