Document Summary
In this section of the course, we learn about and calculate moments. Major areas of study include: use of cross-product and determinants to solve moment problems, moments using scalar or cvn methods, rotational equilibrium; and, determining moments about specified axis. So far, we have defined 2 multiplication operations for vectors: scalar multiplication, the dot product. Another type of vector multiplication with its own set of rules is the cross product: (vector !) cross (vector !) equals (vector !) Follows right hand rule: index finger in direction of ! (1st vector, middle finger in direction of ! (2nd vector, thumb points (90 ) in direction of ! (answer) Hint: for the right hand rule just defined, the vectors for index and middle fingers were specified in a specific order. The cross product is formally defined using the preceding notation. However, we often need to apply it to vectors expressed in cvn.
