Introduction
The Camrose District Fish and Game Association (CDFGA) understands that land trusts share a
destiny with the communities that they work with and, recognize that more should be done to
meet the needs of those communities. Pleasure Island, an extension of the CDFGA, has been
functioning with the assistance of the Wildlife Trust Fund, a fund that was started after observing
that critical habitats were disappearing at a rapid rate in Alberta. This trust fund has grown to
include over 100 properties across the province that encompass more 43,000 acres of important
fish and wildlife habitat. Wildlife Trust Fund is open to all forms of recreational activities
including hunting, fishing, wildlife viewings and family outings; activities that have been
accessible to visitors of Pleasure Island.
The site assessment done over the past 4 months made vivid the changing needs of Pleasure
Island. Pleasure Island has been doing a great job in maintaining wildlife habitats and enhancing
fishing on the property. However, my findings were imminently compelling, there is need to re-
evaluate and update the habitat conservation strategies that Pleasure Island currently has in place.
The property has the foundation of what constitutes of a good habitat, food, water and coverage,
but the problem lies in connecting the different zones, a step that is crucial for the increase and
stability of wildlife populations. As the property is growing more long term strategies should be
adapted in order to meet up to the need and services of the growing wildlife and fish.
My recommendations seek to set fourth practical steps for recalibrating the property’s priories,
methods, structures, funding and projects so that land trusts continue to function effectively. I
