Sept 21 – Athletic Identity • Athletic identity is the degree to which a person identifies with being an athlete in the athletic role • Someone who says I am a great hockey player as the first thing you say when someone asks you to describe yourself • As athletic identity increases, so too does the extent to which people define themselves based on their athletic prowess or success in the athletic role • Individuals high on athletic identity are more likely to attend to cues in the environment that confirm they are athletes • Individuals high on athletic identity want to be publicly recognized as fulfilling the role of “being an athlete” • As such, they will seek out situations to show off their athletic characteristics and endorse or strengthen their athletic identity • Athletes who have high athletic identity are more likely to enjoy success as athletes • Athletic identity is likely to be higher in successful athletes Problems with High Athletic Injury
