Document Summary

Tidal volume (tv): the amount of air exhaled in one breath. Inspiratory reserve volume (irv): the maximum volume of air that can be inhaled, above tidal volume. Expiratory reserve volume (erv): maximum amount of air that can be exhaled with effort, below tidal volume. Residual volume (rv): amount of air remaining in the lungs after maximum expiration, it keeps the alveoli inflated and mixes with fresh breath in the next inspiration. Vital capacity (vc): maximum amount of air that can be expired after a maximum inspiration. Inspiratory capacity (ic): max amount that can be inhaled after a tidal expiration. Functional residual capacity (frc): amount of air remaining after a normal tidal expiration. Total lung capacity (tlc): maximum amount of air the lungs can contain. In other words, not all the air in each breath is available for the exchange of oxygen andcarbon dioxide.
