PSYCO105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Limbic System, Monoamine Oxidase, Electroconvulsive Therapy
Document Summary
Another approach to evaluating the effectiveness of psychotherapy is to survey large numbers of people who have been in therapy and measure their reactions to the experience. A good example of the survey approach is a study carried out by the periodical consumer reports (crs) Self-relatedness: the ability to be exible to change, to listen carefully to the therapist, and to use constructively what is learned in therapy. Antidepressant drugs fall into three major categories: tricyclics (ex. Elavil, tofranil: monoamine oxidase (mao) inhibitors (ex. Nardil, parnate: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssris) (ex. The rst two classes increase the activity of the excitatory neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, whose lowered level of activity in brain regions involved in positive emotion and motivation is related to depression. The tricyclics work by preventing reuptake of the excitatory transmitters into the presynaptic neurons, allowing them to continue stimulating postsynaptic neurons.
