Another approach to evaluating the effectiveness of psychotherapy is to survey large numbers of people who have been in therapy and measure their reactions to the experience. Antidepressant drugs fall into three major categories: tricyclics (ex. Elavil, tofranil: monoamine oxidase (mao) inhibitors (ex. Nardil, parnate: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssris) (ex. The rst two classes increase the activity of the excitatory neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, whose lowered level of activity in brain regions involved in positive emotion and motivation is related to depression. The tricyclics work by preventing reuptake of the excitatory transmitters into the presynaptic neurons, allowing them to continue stimulating postsynaptic neurons.
