Components of the psyche: the id: unconscious and operates according to the pleasure principle, seeks pleasure and immediate gratification without concern of the possible consequences for inappropriate thoughts and actions. Reflects both: eros: life instinct, thanatos: death instinct, aggression reflects conflict between the death and life instincts. Oedipus & electra: as children reach 4 years old, they covet the opposite sexed parent, boys: desire for mother balanced by fear of father (castration anxiety, ex. Little hans resolved through identification with the father. : girls: suffer from penis envy and this results in a weaker superego. Freud considered drives to be analogous to physical forms of energy that build up over time and must somehow be released. Freud concluded from his observations that much of human behaviour consists of disguised manifestations of sex and aggression and that personality differences lie in the different ways that people disguise and channel these drives.
