April 3rd - family and lifestyles: family processes and adult lifestyles. Transactional processes: parents can influence children, but then children can also influence parents, ex. scaffolding. Theoretical frameworks that consider families as systems: ecological theory child in centre; reciprocal relationship with child and their microsystems, dynamic systems theory. What are some historical events that have impacted families: residential schools, war, great depression, divorce laws. Multiple developmental trajectories: adults and children follow different trajectories of development. Adult developmental trajectory timing of entry into cohabitation, marriage, parenthood. Child developmental trajectory timing of child care, entry into elementary/middle school. Timing of things can be planned (planned delays) or unplanned (job loss) Increase in adults who choose to remain single: delaying marriage, although earl(cid:455) (cid:373)arriages (cid:449)as(cid:374)"t the (cid:374)or(cid:373) a(cid:373)o(cid:374)g (cid:862)e(cid:448)er(cid:455)da(cid:455)(cid:863) people. Increasing cohabitation less people becoming legally married. Stereotypes facing single adults (ex. desperately lonely: have to function in a marriage-oriented society. Advantages: privacy, autonomy/freedom to do what you want, time to meet goals.
