Cognitive neuroscience- field concerned with studying the neural/physiological basis of cognition. Involves and understanding of both the nervous system as well as the individual units that comprise that system. Neurons- cells that are specialized to receive and transmit information in the nervous system. To observe the structure of the brain, 19th century anatomists applied special stains to brain tissue which increased the contrast between different types of tissue within the brain. When viewing the under a microscope, they saw a continuous network they called a nerve net: nerve net- network of continuously interconnected nerve fibers; allows for almost nonstop, continuous communication of signals throughout the network.
