Perception might not be affected by beliefs, desires, goals. Visual world is a set of data that completely determines visual processing. The feature accumulation theory of vision- like self(cid:396)idge"s pa(cid:374)de(cid:373)o(cid:374)iu(cid:373) theo(cid:396)(cid:455) Poverty of the stimulus might be dealt with by theory-driven/top-down processing (cognitive processing) Idea is that, you see what you believe. Your knowledge of the world creates expectations which strongly influence how you see the world: these expectations are used to reduce visual ambiguities (cid:862)seei(cid:374)g is (cid:271)elie(cid:448)i(cid:374)g(cid:863) Perception is a matter of suggesting and testing hypothesis. Perception is a literal kind of thinking/problem solving: need a mechanism to fill in missing information from poverty of the stimulus by this processing. Problems: these theories are incomplete, pure top down theories are not very adaptive.
