Document Summary
Consciousness does not stem from one brain area. Arises from activity in distributed networks of neural pathways. Electroencephalograph (eeg): monitors electrical activity of brain over time. Different brain waves for different stages of consciousness (beta, alpha) Circadian rhythms promote sleep readiness and is regulated by the hypothalamus. Circadian rhythm is better at lengthening your day (staying up longer) than it is at shortening the day. Stage 2 sleep: sleep spindles and mixed eeg activity. Slow-wave sleep (stage 3 and 4): progressively more delta waves. Stage 1: light sleep that lasts less than 10 min. Breathing, hr, body temp, muscle tension slows down. Stage 3 and 4: slow-wave sleep, reaches 30 min into sleep and remain for ~30 min. Rem sleep (stage 5): high arousal yet difficult to awaken. Stages 3 and 4 disappear (rem cycles continue) The longer you sleep the longer your rem cycles are (the longest rem stage usually happens right before waking up)
