Document Summary

Chemical (gustation & olfaction, [taste & smell]) detect chemicals in environment. Somatic (mechanical, pain, temperature) mechanical touch, ability to physically feel pain can feel pain w/ out affect to temperature temperature can damage temperature receptors & won"t affect pain receptors burn hand: 1. that"s hot , 2. that hurts. Sensation: simulations of a sense organ. detection of something. experience of feeling. sensory organs absorb physical energy in the environment & transform it into action potentials. Transduction: meeting between you and the outside world. w/out it you wouldn"t know there was an outside world. Transforms physical energy into biochemical energy. (eg: slicing skin into sending pain receptor signals). eg: detecting light , rods and cones. Sensory adaptation: reduced sensitivity to stimulation resulting from prolonged exposure to a stimulus. Senses adapt to a stimulus (eg heat, pain, salty ) Perception: recognize something out there. organize, identify & interpret a sensation. slower than sensation. Background activity in nervous system (neurons constantly ring) white noise.
