Sleep - Memory/brain development model
REM sleep playes an important role in learning and brain development.
- Similar brain activity to as when awake.
- When animals are kept out of REM, learning decreases.
- Elevated heart rate / relaxtion of muscles to supress moter commands.
- Sleepwalking seems to happen in stage 3 & 4 sleep.
Girnell et al
Rats were trained to run a complex maze over numerous days.
Control: normal sleep. Experimental: Removed brain ability to enter REM
Rats prevented from entering REM didn't learn to run the maze fast.
As we get older, we spend proportionally less time in REM sleep.
Infant: 70%, 6mo old: 30%, 8yr: 22%, Adult: 15%.
One theory is that REM sleep does not help consolidate, rather, helps
reshape neurons, reconnect synapses.
Mirimiran et al
Rats were prevented from entering REM with drugs.
Resulted in less brain mass, sparser connected neurons,
Primarilly in forebrain. Also body weighed less overall.
Marks et al,
Kittens were prevented from entering REM with drugs.
Severe deficits in visual processing and moter control.
REM = brain development, and memory/learning is a subclass therein.∴
Hypnosis grew out of the practice of mesmerism - an attempt to treat
