Document Summary
Psych 104 lecture #9 biological psychology pt. Anatomy, lateralization and plasticity: anatomy of brain. 3 major parts: hindbrain, most ancient evolutionary structure, keeps us alive with basic physiological processes, comprises of, medulla. Brain stem structure that controls lots of vital bodily functions, including heart activity and largely breathing, swallowing and digestion. 1st structure contained within brain many signals pass through medulla. Connected with sensory and motor nerves tracts coming up from spinal cord and descending from brain. Inhibited by large amounts of alcohol (poisoning) and biological functions are disrupted (eg. heart rate) Brain stem structure having sensory or motor tracts involved in sleep: pons and dreaming. Pass signals from high to low levels of nervous system (and vice versa) eg. motor signals from spinal cord. Controls medulla (eg. respiration) and sits above it. Damage to it would result in coma: cerebellum. Convoluted hindbrain structure involved in motor coordination balance and muscle tone and some aspects of learning and memory.
