Document Summary
Psych 104 lecture #22 learning and adaptation. Learning: experience produce a relatively enduring change in an organism"s behaviour or capabilities. Capabilities: knowing how (learning) vs. doing (performance: big three of learning. Change in behaviour resulting from repeated exposure to a single. Associate responses with specific consequences: habituation and sensitization, habituation, decreases in strength of response to a repeated stimulus. Sensory receptors will fire the same but cns will become deadened over time to exposure of same stimulus. If organism responded to every stimulus in environment, would become overwhelmed and exhausted quickly. Habituation helps conserve energy and focus on other important: different from sensory adaptation stimuli. Habituation is simple form of learning that occurs within cns. The tactile info is still present and there, you haven"t adapted to it you"re only blocking it out at the moment: long-term habituation. Stimuli presented are closed together over time. Fast and volatile: highly specific, sensitization, increase in strength of response to a repeated stimulus.
