Guest Lecture #3; Stress Resilience in convict cichlid fish
Theories about Stress
1. Cumulative Stress Hypothesis
a. Increase of stress = more detrimental to our health.
b. We don’t benefit from stress.
c. As stress accumulates, it leads to diseases.
2. Mismatch hypothesis
a. Brnrgiy/frytimrny fprnfd on contrxt.
b. It triggers adaptive processes that leads to being able to handle stress.
c. If they have high early life stress, and low (or high) stress in adult life → can handle the
stress.
d. If they have low stress → High stress adults → bad = disease because they can not
handle the stress.
e. Sensitivity to programming may impact which model influences adult behaviours. →
Genes may cause environmental influences
i. High sensitivity → try to adapt
ii. Low sensitivity → Do not need to adapt
iii. “Programming Sensitivity” → How sensitivity impacts their adaptation to stress.
3. Stress Inoculation Hypothesis
a. Inverted U function
b. Stress resilience at optimal severity level.
c. Moderate stress levels allow you to learn and apply later in life (stress resilience), but if it
is too high or too low they are incapable of developing stress resilience.
i. Chronic Stress → Can’t get passed it and can not effectively get passed it.
Personality In Fish (the concepts on the right)
1. Openness → Boldness
a. How long it takes to go loo at new things.
2. Conscientiousness → Exploration
a. How long will it take for them to explore their environment.
3. Extroversion → Aggressiveness
a. Are they going to attack species.
4. Agreeableness → Activity
5. Neuroticism → sociability
Behavioural Types of syndromes
Optimal relationships between traits → maximize survivability
May be influenced by circumstances
Adaptive strategies.
If predator is there you have a behavioural type → If not there you can act freely and hide when
the predator is present.
Individual (types) vs population (syndrome)
Anxiety
Stress coping style
Exploration-Boldness
Every individual has a behavioural type, but not every population has a behavioural syndrome.

Document Summary

Guest lecture #3; stress resilience in convict cichlid fish. Increase of stress = more detrimental to our health. a: we don"t benefit from stress, as stress accumulates, it leads to diseases, mismatch hypothesis, brnrgiy/frytimrny fprnfd on contrxt. b. c. It triggers adaptive processes that leads to being able to handle stress. If they have high early life stress, and low (or high) stress in adult life can handle the stress. If they have low stress high stress adults bad = disease because they can not handle the stress. d: sensitivity to programming may impact which model influences adult behaviours. Genes may cause environmental influences i. ii. iii. Low sensitivity do not need to adapt. Programming sensitivity how sensitivity impacts their adaptation to stress. Chronic stress can"t get passed it and can not effectively get passed it: stress inoculation hypothesis. Optimal relationships between traits maximize survivability.
