Psych 105: individual and social behaviour (25th january 2019)- lecture 9. Her mentally unstable father kept her locked in a room for. When she was rescued, she was unable to walk, talk or even keep her balance. Although a 13-year-old, her mental age was that of an infant. After being rescued genie was curious about the world and she assumed that everything had its own label. She learned fast but her vocabulary was small, and her grammar skills were not good. As her parents hardly spoke to her, her brain never got to keep the connections involved in language. Lad functions more effectively during the first 10 year of childhood. It is easier to learn a second language for people who have mastered their first language. But fir language is essential to learn within the critical period. Children are predisposed with acquired language; but language acquiring doesn"t occur in isolation.
